Apartments for rent in downtown DSM
The Fleming Building is an 11-story historic property that was designed and built in 1909 by the world-renowned architect Daniel Burnham as an example of the technical innovations in tall building construction during the early 1900's.
Located in the core of downtown Des Moines at Sixth and Walnut, the Fleming Building offers apartments for rent starting at $650 per month. Apartment rentals range from studio units that have the most great room space in the city to spacious two bedroom units with spectacular urban views.
The building located at 218 6th Avenue offers skywalk connections to the city's best restaurants and businesses. The building will also be adding retail, office and restaurants on the first two floors.

Everywhere Daniel Burnham’s firm designed, the renowned architect and urban planner left behind a landmark. New York City has the Flatiron Building; Washington, D.C. has Union Station. In Chicago, Burnham’s home base, the former Marshall Field’s flagship and The Rookery remain as a testament to his Beaux-Arts influenced style and bold vision.
Burnham — like his buildings — loomed large. A turn-of-the-century Chicago powerbroker, his story — captured Erik Larson’s bestselling book “The Devil in the White City,” — remains as compelling as the structures he created during his career.
Des Moines boasts a Burnham landmark, too. The Fleming Building, constructed in 1907, is one of only two of the noted architect’s designs in Iowa. This historic icon of Des Moines will return to its role as a vibrant center for downtown life after a complete revitalization by Nelson Development LLC.
As Burnham himself once said: "Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will not themselves be realized."
