The Architect - Daniel Burnham

Everywhere Daniel Burnham’s firm designed, the renowned architect and urban planner left behind a landmark. New York City has the Flatiron Building; Washington, D.C. has Union Station. In Chicago, Burnham’s home base, the former Marshall Field’s flagship and The Rookery remain as a testament to his Beaux-Arts influenced style and bold vision.

Burnham — like his buildings — loomed large. A turn-of-the-century Chicago powerbroker, his story — captured Erik Larson’s bestselling book “The Devil in the White City,” — remains as compelling as the structures he created during his career.

Des Moines boasts a Burnham landmark, too. The Fleming Building, constructed in 1909, is one of only two of the noted architect’s designs in Iowa. This historic icon of Des Moines will return to its role as a vibrant center for downtown life after a complete revitalization by Nelson Development LLC.

As Burnham himself once said: "Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will not themselves be realized."
